Role of FTAs in Boosting Indian Agri Trade

Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) play a crucial role in enhancing India's position in global agricultural markets. By reducing or eliminating import tariffs, FTAs help Indian exporters access foreign markets with greater ease and competitiveness.

India has signed several FTAs with regions like ASEAN, the UAE, and Australia, which offer preferential trade terms for agricultural commodities. These agreements allow Indian exporters to enter high-demand markets with reduced duties, lower compliance costs, and fewer trade barriers.

For example, the India-UAE CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement) has facilitated increased agricultural trade in key commodities. Similarly, negotiations with the UK and EU are expected to further liberalize trade, especially in processed foods and organic products.

FTAs often come with mutual recognition of food safety standards and sanitary regulations. This minimizes delays at ports and helps exporters maintain quality throughout the supply chain. However, businesses must stay informed about the specific provisions of each FTA to make the most of these benefits.

Exporters should also register with government agencies like APEDA and utilize support services like the Market Access Initiative (MAI) and RoDTEP scheme for additional benefits.
