Understanding Non-Tariff Barriers in Agriculture

Non-tariff barriers (NTBs) are often more complex than tariffs and can significantly impact agricultural exports from India. These barriers include health regulations, quality standards, packaging norms, and customs delays.

For Indian exporters, complying with different countries’ food safety and phytosanitary (SPS) measures is a critical step in market entry. For instance, pesticide residue limits in the EU and labeling requirements in the US can delay or reject shipments if not met.

Technical Barriers to Trade (TBTs) such as eco-labeling, certification, and traceability requirements are rising globally. Many importers now demand proof of sustainability and fair trade practices—adding layers of documentation and inspections.

Language differences in labeling, specific port requirements, and origin certifications are also common NTBs. These vary from country to country and need precise understanding and preparation.

To tackle NTBs, exporters must work closely with government agencies like APEDA, regularly review import country regulations, and ensure their products pass international lab testing.

Investing in training, using professional compliance services, and staying informed through trade bulletins are smart ways to overcome NTBs and expand globally.
