Logistics and Cold Chain Infrastructure for Agri Exports

Efficient logistics and cold chain infrastructure are vital to the success of India’s agricultural exports, especially for perishable goods like fruits, vegetables, and dairy.

India has made considerable progress in enhancing its cold storage capacity. Mega Food Parks, refrigerated transport systems, and container freight stations are now more accessible to exporters. Yet, gaps remain—especially in first-mile connectivity from farms to processing centers.

For perishable exports, temperature control is critical. Any lapse in cold chain continuity can lead to spoilage, reduced shelf life, and rejected shipments. Investing in modern equipment, insulated packaging, and GPS-monitored vehicles is now a must for exporters.

Ports like Mumbai, Mundra, and Kochi are improving agro-logistics handling with fast-track customs clearance, reefer plug-in points, and dedicated export terminals. Inland Container Depots (ICDs) are also being developed in landlocked states to facilitate export from remote farming regions.

The government’s PM Gati Shakti initiative and Agriculture Infrastructure Fund are helping bridge gaps in the logistics ecosystem.

Agri-exporters should partner with professional logistics providers, monitor shipping routes, and maintain real-time temperature logs to ensure quality and compliance.
