India’s Agricultural Trade Balance and Future Outlook

India has maintained a positive agricultural trade balance over the past decade, thanks to consistent export performance and strong global demand. Despite global disruptions, India’s net agri-trade surplus in 2024 stood at over USD 20 billion.

Crops like rice, spices, and oilseeds dominate exports, while imports are largely limited to items like edible oils and pulses. This structure allows India to stay self-reliant while earning valuable foreign exchange.

Looking ahead, India aims to diversify both its export basket and destination markets. Strategic FTAs, technology adoption, and infrastructure development are expected to play key roles in achieving this.

Emerging export destinations in Africa and Central Asia offer promising opportunities. The Indian government is actively promoting brand India through trade fairs, digital platforms, and diplomatic missions.

However, achieving long-term growth requires overcoming challenges like climate impact, global competition, and compliance with evolving international norms.

With continued policy support, private sector investment, and global partnerships, India’s agricultural trade is poised for robust expansion.
